CAD ArtistsColumbia Art District from 15th to 24th street along Columbia Ave. received designation from the City Council as an improvement authority. The authority has its own governing board made of local business owners and residents. This is in response to the Corridor Improvement Authority Act of 2005, which: “Establishes an Authority for the purpose of redeveloping its commercial corridors, promoting economic growth. “

The section of Columbia Avenue from Prospect Park to 15th Street is slated for extensive beautification starting in 2009. Plans are underway and include pathway lighting for Prospect Park, decorative light posts lining Columbia Avenue to provide a safer community for residents, intersection curbing and sidewalks could be refinished in an artsy and fun manner to promote sidewalk traffic. Sculptures, art areas, and focal points at sporatic spots will help generate curiosity.

When the overall project is completed, the property value of residents and economic life of the surrounding businesses will receive a long-term boost. The project will also bring community members together, as they will have a shared sense of ownership over the new Columbia Art District.

The $400,000 improvement project will promote economic growth and enhance the community momentum already behind Columbia Avenue. In remodeling and landscaping the area, local businesses will see increased traffic and homeowners will enjoy appreciating house and land value. See below for a complete map of the proposed scheduled improvements. By setting up the authority, the district is allowed future application of Michigan Main Street Designation. Designation serves as an avenue to access additional state resources.

To subsidize costs, the Columbia Arts District Committee is launching a number of sponsorship programs including a brick campaign. Residents and businesses of the greater Holland Area can purchase engraved bricks to line the sidewalk of the new Columbia Avenue. For $50, the sponsor receives one line of text and for $75, two lines.
